It’s telling when a magazine editor becomes a more precise barometer of fashion than the catwalk collections. Then again, she is not any magazine editor. As Editor of French Vogue, Carine Roitfeld celebrates the nefariously seductive spectrum of fashion; if Italian Vogue is the most fantastical, French Vogue is by far the edgiest. The same could be said for her personal style, all vertiginous heels and kohled eyes, she looks as if she’d move with the heavy tread of a thoroughbred. And her unapologetic abhorrence for the industry’s love affair with peripherals – jewellery, handbags, jaunty hairstyles – hardly suggests a mellow interior. But the truth is that she’s both a devoted philanthropist and mother. She says, “I’m not as mean as I look.”
